This course is for teachers who work with international students at secondary level in the UK within a careers context. It offers practical tips for supporting this cohort of students throughout their school career, as well as ideas for designing tailored careers education and guidance.
The course will cover:
- an overview of international students within the UK
- how to address specific needs of this demographic li>
- how to better engage parents and guardians of international students
- an examination of the HE context for international students in the UK
- useful resources and materials
- a whole-school approach to supporting international students
The course will provide opportunities to:
- exlore different approaches to working with international students
- meet other school staff who work with international students
- share knowledge and experiences
- review and evaluate CEIAG policy relating to international students in your school

About Dr Mariama Ifode-Blease, MA, MPhil, PhD, FHEA
Course Leader Dr Mariama Ifode-Blease works as an independent careers consultant and community engagement practitioner. Mariama completed her undergraduate degree in French and Spanish at the University of St Andrews, followed by an MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge.
As a secondary school MFL teacher and Head of Careers, Mariama developed her knowledge of the higher education landscape in both the UK and the US. In 2009, she was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship to New York University and she became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2013. Mariama has worked as Senior International Admissions Officer for New York University, and as a Schools and Colleges Liaison Officer for the University of Cambridge Admissions Office.
In 2018, Mariama has completed an MA in Careers Education and Coaching, with the Qualification in Career Development, at the University of Derby. She is also a member of the Career Development Institute (CDI) and the International Association for Educational and Vocational Guidance (IAEVG). Mariama has enjoyed mentoring and supporting students through her roles in secondary and tertiary education, and is committed to enabling and encouraging young people to fulfil their full potential.
